Right now, most flicker-free displays on the market mask screen flickering by using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and higher frequency backlights to give the impression of being flicker-free. What should we know about flicker?

“Flickering” is a characteristic of most LED screens. That's because they use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). PWM works at a fixed frequency and turns the backlight on and off to dim the backlight on LED monitors and give the impression of being less bright. As we can see from the image on the right, most monitors today have relatively long ‘on’ and ‘off’ periods.

The introduction of high-frequency backlights (also seen on the image above) can now better mask screen flickering by producing faster PWM cycle times. Although shortening the PWM cycle time is an improvement over current technology, the effects they create on the eyes and nervous system are still present.

Flickering is not always apparent to computer users. This is because the refresh rate of many displays is too fast for the human eye to perceive. The illusion of a constant, steady stream of light from the display's backlight is created by “flicker fusion threshold”, which is the combination of flicker frequency, light intensity and color.

It's true that web developers, writers, students, graphic designers and anyone else that uses a computer screen for extended periods of time are more likely to feel the effects of flickering. However, the reason we aren't more aware of this problem because the brain blocks out these signal that would otherwise disrupt our viewing.

How does screen flickering lead to eye strain and other symptoms of CVS? Flickering causes these symptoms by continuously projecting drastic change in brightness to the human eye. These frequent changes (suddenly dark, suddenly light) cause the pupil to make drastic adjustments from large and small, and the affect this has on the autonomic nervous system thus causes eye fatigue.

Furthermore, the lower the brightness is on a regular display, the flickering light they give off becomes more pronounced and gives off distracting signals that are picked up by a user's eyes and transmitted to the brain – just try to imagine the distracting flickering of a CFL tube light before it is replaced!

How to easily test Flicker-Free when buying a display at the retailer

  1. Mobile phone test –With the screen turned on, set the screen to a brighter setting. Next, turn on your smartphone video camera and point it at the display. Now start to adjust brightness from 100% to 50% and even to 0%, and watch as the flicker effect becomes more visible.

  2. Basic Camera Test – Take a picture of your screen with a camera. This is a simple test to look for flicker in the captured image. (Please use recording mode).
